Lumograph is a machine for displaying animated pixel patterns on a matrix of 64 light boxes. In a world where we can find high definition flat screens everywhere, Lumograph goes exactly in the opposite direction by using a super low resolution for it’s images, and ancient illumination technology (good old light bulps).
The 8×8 matrix is actually a combined image of 4 units each having 4×4 pixels. Each unit can display individual patterns, or switch to combine forces into one ‘big’ display of 8×8.
We found that an arrangement of 4×4 pixels with a binary state (pixels can be either on or off) form a basic unit of information that can still be instantly perceived by the human eye. Combining a few of these simple units starts challenging our perception and leads to ‘jumping’ attention.
